Hopped Up – European Hot Rod Culture : Exhibition

Got a slight deviation from our standard operating procedure today. And it’s one for the Londoners on board. As per the title of the post really, though I’ve copied the text direct from the Proud Galleries website, as they did a great job wrapping up the backround for this highly recommended exhibition :

Be sure to head down to Proud Camden’s South Gallery between 25th February and 11th April 2010 to view Hopped Up, the first exhibition to taken from David Biene’s sell-out book by the same name. Exploring European Hot Rod culture through beautiful fine art photography, this exhibition documents life from the garage to the race track and all that lies in between. Experience the iconic rockabilly style of the ‘40s and ‘50s for one month only – don’t miss out.”

Check it out when next you’re in town. Limited edition prints can be bought from the gallery or online via the Proud Galleries link below, with T-Shirts available from David Biene’s own Hopped Up website. All links below!

And of course no post would ever be featured without a musical link of some sorts, and so today I’ve selected this appropriately titled little Rock n’ Roll instrumental from King Curtis.

MP3 : King Curtis – Hot Rod (Mediafire) / (Zshare)

Great original 1958 full length video below. It’s a bit of a departure from the street rod scene, and focuses instead on the official National Hot Rod Association 1/4mile racing. FYI – European Nationals will be on at Santa Pod raceway around the end of May! I myself have been before and it’s a cracking day out. Bring some ear plugs though!

===================================

We asked Vermont a few questions:

Where and how was this mix recorded?

The set was recorded in my living room. I used two turntables, a MacBook laptop with Serato installed and a Vestax PMC-250. I think they no longer make this mixer It’s designed like an old House-Music mixer. The physical approach was absolutely old school with no editing whatsoever.

What’s the idea behind this mix? Is there any special moment in it for you?

I aimed at selecting tracks which are beyond this or that fashion. And I hope this set won’t sound too out of date even in a few years. Most of today’s electronic music has a very short life span and it tends to become irrelevant in record times. On the other hand a set comprised of classics only won’t be interesting at all. With many treasures re-released digitally finding the true gems people don’t know or forgot is only a matter of patience and time to go through catalogs.
I don’t really like recording music at home and I don’t do this often or at all. It’s a bit strange playing music with no crowd and facing a wall. My original plan was to create a completely different set than the one I finally made but I lost the disk with all my files so instead I used the best of what I had in backed up. Once I started enjoying myself I just went with the flow and ended up with this set.
While recording I made some pasta with meat ball and tomato sauce (and also had a much needed cold beer). It’s really hard playing seriously in my living room. There’s isn’t much room for the mixer and there are loads of acoustic issues, so I end up guessing where the bit is.
The other set was recorded because I felt that it’s a niche where I can expose the Israel-Underground community to stuff they just don’t know.
The moment I love most is the mix going from Hood to Mills and Rolando.

What musical genres can we expect to find in your sets (not just this one)?

I know many people tend to say this but I really love to mix many genres, and also to step out of the clubbing sphere or even the electronic sphere. Listening to various sets of mine you can end up listening to 80’s electronic music, Detroid techno, Dub Techno, Chicago House, Italo, old school Breaks, fluffy D’n'B, a little bit Dubstep and even Krautrock, movie soundtracks, Drone, Post Rock, Feedback music and of course Stoner.

Vinyls, CD’s or MP3’s?

I completely moved to the digital format. I see no reason to fiddle with problematic CDs or Vinyl. I understand people who love the ancient format of vinyl, which keeps on dying for so many years but never goes all the way, but I have to admit that all my vinyls were moved to my mother’s place because I had no room for them.

Tell us about the plans for your label "False Industries" as well as other labels you’re involved with (such as the Japanese "Spekk".

False Industries was started in order to go against current trends. There aren’t any big plans for it but to release music that I like and phased out almost completely. Most of the artists are my friends and most of them are veteran producers I appreciate. Some of the artists are Berlin-based Dieb, Ulrich Schnauss, Paul Davis, Frank Bretschneider, the Raster-Noton label owner and more.
I hope to soon open another label that will deal with more acoustic and rockish sides of alternative music.
As for Spekk, I’m currently working on another album that will hopefully be released there. It’s such a pleasure working with Spekk’s owner. He’s one of the most professional people I’ve met in the scene. I also sometimes release my music with the German label Freizeit Globen. The label owner there is a great man who keeps the "good ol’ days" vibe.

Where do you believe the IDM genre is heading? Do you think it’s getting enough exposure in the world of electronic music?

The genre is quite dead actually, or if I need to be more precise it lost its liveliness and that one of the reasons why I’m moving to acoustic musical instruments and electric bass. The bright side of the story is that many IDM producers moved to different genres, so it’s still possible to find great contemplative music, only with some more search than before.
As for exposure, when the content is harder to understand it’s naturally aimed at fewer people. Whoever does that as a rule can’t complain about "too little exposure".

How did you get to IU and what does it mean to you?

I reached IU a long time ago around 2001. At the time I wrote for a music related paper and got this mission to write about communities focused around electronic music. One of the old IU members gave me the address and I got in. For many years I only read and then started writing as well. Sometimes I love it there but sometimes there are posts that can get you angry. All in all it’s a blessed project.

You’re one of the founders of the almost legendary "Exercise" parties in Tel-Aviv. Is there a chance to do some more "Exercise" in the future? Can you point at your favorite "Exercise" of all?

It’s hard to say. I’m currently in a different stage in my life, and I can’t see myself committing to a party line the way I used to. But then again, it could be really nice doing this "back to the future Exercise" or something like that. Of all Exercises I liked the Sebo K party, which was absolutely crazy. He played one of THE best sets there. The party with Ben Klock was very fun as well.

Imagine yourself 10 years from now and tell all us about it.

It’s hard to think of ten years from now. I think I’d like to keep on releasing music, study history and find a job that doesn’t take much time but makes a lot of money.

"In past life I was probably a _______"?

An alchemist.

================================

We asked Amichay a few questions:

Where and how was this mix recorded?

This set was recorded at home using the same gear I’ve been using in the past 10 years – 2 x CDJ100, 2 x Technics turntables, an Ecler (this Spanish made mixers sound great compared to the big names such as Pioneer and Vestax but isn’t as expensive) mixer and my custom-made single-ear Sony MDR 700 headphone.

What’s the idea behind this mix? Is there any special moment in it for you?

I knew that I want to integrate as many tracks and genres that I love into this mix. I also knew that it’s impossible if I want to stay well within the 90 minutes timeframe, but eventually I managed to squeeze the most significant of what I’ve experienced in the past 10 years into this melting pot. I have to admit that I was very happy to record this set for IU since in the past year I haven’t played outside at all and hardly ever for fun at home. I didn’t give up on club and definitely didn’t give up on music, but took some time off the intensity usually involved in it. I consider this time off blessed for two reasons: Going out of the furnace allows a different and unique angle over what I’ve been a part of for such a long time and also makes me more appreciative of what I already have. It also helps to open up to genres other than those I was exposed to in clubs and of course learn more in a sterile environment.

What musical genres can we expect to find in your sets (not just this one)?

This really depends on the length of the mix. I will start with those you will probably hear in any of my sets. Obviously you’ll see some House and Disco, later on som Funk (Roy Ayers, Grover Washington Jr., Al Green), some oldschool Soul (Marvin Gaye, Gil Scott Heron), Various types of Detroit and Chicago based music and even Rock (I recall playing Edwin Starr and Led-Zeppelin to a crowd), Hip-Hop, Salsa, real 80’s Italo and some 80’s Electronic music.

Vinyls, CD’s or MP3’s?

Vinyls – I think everyone agrees on that mainly because of the sound, the feel and the collection itself, but I’m playing CD’s as well. It’s just CD’s in the car and MP3’s in my iPod.

Recently you have been actively volunteering and community service in Israel. What can you tell us about it?

During my first year as a student I worked part-time in a music school as an instructor in a "DJ" course. The school owner knew a lasy who ran a community-service project aimed at helping the foreign-workers’ kids in Tel-Aviv. She thought that rytham, movement and djing classes will really be favourable by the kids. We built a full set of lectures and classes together, I recruited some friends from home and from IU in order to take part in this project, but unfortunately the project never came to life for technical reasons. I really hope to have a chance to revive this project in the future. Everything is already set.

What is the most intense experience you’ve had during your time in NYC?

New-York was an unforgettable experience for me and "my life’s mission". I just finished my military service and went there to chase the dream which was to learn where this amazing music that drives me comes from. I never thought I’d experience half of what I did. There must be some cosmic explanation for this, but let’s leave the NYC stories for a later time. The most significant moment was my meeting with David Mancuso. Don’t get me wrong – there were great parties and loads of fun but this was THE moment for me. My landlord was a known figure in the NYC nightlife and apparently he was quite close to David Mancuso. They’re both very intelligent and a bit dreamy. I asked him to arrange a meeting so he just did. We went to Mancuso’s place and spent 3 hours talking. I was less interested in musical philosophies but rather pushed the conversation towards "how it was back then when it all started" and what’s different today. The answer was "not much". According to David Mancuso it takes no more than good music that sounds good, played using a good sounds system that’s arranged properly to have a good party/ It doesn’t take 3000 people nor 1500. The basic principle is always the same. When I asked him again what makes his sound systems and parties be unforgettable for figures like Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, Frunkie Knuckles and many more he simply replied "Follow the laws of physics". Until today he still runs his aprties in the exact same conditions and 4 times a year, and those who were there say that these are the BEST parties (for 30 years in a row). The man’s simplicity and modesty really impressed me. Today we’re still emailing each other once every few months. David is really interested in Israel, in local politics and would really like to come and visit. When we left his place we were already one floor down when he called us back. "You’re not going anywhere until I give you something for the way – some chocolate, so you’ll leave here with a sweet feeling".

How did you get to IU and what does it mean to you?

I joined the IsraelUnderground community during 2000 and at the age of 18 (I’m 27 now). I located the link to the community’s board in a nightlife website called XTRA. At the time I was very interested in what’s going on in clubs, music and djing. I could spend hours watching pictures and videos from parties in various websites. When I joined the IU community I figured out that this IS the place to get to know people who enhoy the same things I do (until that day all my friends were going to mainstream parties for younger crowds and I craved for the Tel-Aviv scene. I got to know the people in IU and was really happy to be able to spend weekends with those who feel the same as me towards electronic music. Beyond that an entire culture evolved within the community’s boundries, with a unique language, habits and style which gave it a life of its own and also gained the scene’s respect (from clubbers to club owners). Today I’m less involved in IU but I’m certain that whoever is participating probably feels the same things I felt. I think that IU today holds an amzing amount of accumulated knowledge regarding the electronic culture and music and that they are all dear to me.

Ever since it was opened you are involved (mentally if not physically) with "The Block" club. Name one artist who played there who really touched you with his music.

The Block club is the second biggest adventure I’ve had. I bow to Yaron Trax for his vision, passion and for making this dream come true for so many people. I never thought I’d be able to listen to the music I love in such an amazing club, with such an amazing sound system, with such great facilities and then will be able to listen to the true legends of house right here "in our back yard". I think it’s a bit funny, but of all artists who played at the block so far I connected better with the more controversial artists, such as Theo Parrish, Moodyman and Tony Humphries. Don’t get me wrong, I think all parties were amazing but these are the artists the taught me new things all night long. They were very interesting to listen to because they played very diverse music.

Imagine yourself 10 years from now and tell all us about it.

Married + 3 kids, VP content/regulation in the satellite company or any similar company in the communications market, a nice summer home in Italy and DJing once a month in "The Block" club.
