We asked Amichay a few questions:

Where and how was this mix recorded?

This set was recorded at home using the same gear I’ve been using in the past 10 years – 2 x CDJ100, 2 x Technics turntables, an Ecler (this Spanish made mixers sound great compared to the big names such as Pioneer and Vestax but isn’t as expensive) mixer and my custom-made single-ear Sony MDR 700 headphone.

What’s the idea behind this mix? Is there any special moment in it for you?

I knew that I want to integrate as many tracks and genres that I love into this mix. I also knew that it’s impossible if I want to stay well within the 90 minutes timeframe, but eventually I managed to squeeze the most significant of what I’ve experienced in the past 10 years into this melting pot. I have to admit that I was very happy to record this set for IU since in the past year I haven’t played outside at all and hardly ever for fun at home. I didn’t give up on club and definitely didn’t give up on music, but took some time off the intensity usually involved in it. I consider this time off blessed for two reasons: Going out of the furnace allows a different and unique angle over what I’ve been a part of for such a long time and also makes me more appreciative of what I already have. It also helps to open up to genres other than those I was exposed to in clubs and of course learn more in a sterile environment.

What musical genres can we expect to find in your sets (not just this one)?

This really depends on the length of the mix. I will start with those you will probably hear in any of my sets. Obviously you’ll see some House and Disco, later on som Funk (Roy Ayers, Grover Washington Jr., Al Green), some oldschool Soul (Marvin Gaye, Gil Scott Heron), Various types of Detroit and Chicago based music and even Rock (I recall playing Edwin Starr and Led-Zeppelin to a crowd), Hip-Hop, Salsa, real 80’s Italo and some 80’s Electronic music.

Vinyls, CD’s or MP3’s?

Vinyls – I think everyone agrees on that mainly because of the sound, the feel and the collection itself, but I’m playing CD’s as well. It’s just CD’s in the car and MP3’s in my iPod.

Recently you have been actively volunteering and community service in Israel. What can you tell us about it?

During my first year as a student I worked part-time in a music school as an instructor in a "DJ" course. The school owner knew a lasy who ran a community-service project aimed at helping the foreign-workers’ kids in Tel-Aviv. She thought that rytham, movement and djing classes will really be favourable by the kids. We built a full set of lectures and classes together, I recruited some friends from home and from IU in order to take part in this project, but unfortunately the project never came to life for technical reasons. I really hope to have a chance to revive this project in the future. Everything is already set.

What is the most intense experience you’ve had during your time in NYC?

New-York was an unforgettable experience for me and "my life’s mission". I just finished my military service and went there to chase the dream which was to learn where this amazing music that drives me comes from. I never thought I’d experience half of what I did. There must be some cosmic explanation for this, but let’s leave the NYC stories for a later time. The most significant moment was my meeting with David Mancuso. Don’t get me wrong – there were great parties and loads of fun but this was THE moment for me. My landlord was a known figure in the NYC nightlife and apparently he was quite close to David Mancuso. They’re both very intelligent and a bit dreamy. I asked him to arrange a meeting so he just did. We went to Mancuso’s place and spent 3 hours talking. I was less interested in musical philosophies but rather pushed the conversation towards "how it was back then when it all started" and what’s different today. The answer was "not much". According to David Mancuso it takes no more than good music that sounds good, played using a good sounds system that’s arranged properly to have a good party/ It doesn’t take 3000 people nor 1500. The basic principle is always the same. When I asked him again what makes his sound systems and parties be unforgettable for figures like Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, Frunkie Knuckles and many more he simply replied "Follow the laws of physics". Until today he still runs his aprties in the exact same conditions and 4 times a year, and those who were there say that these are the BEST parties (for 30 years in a row). The man’s simplicity and modesty really impressed me. Today we’re still emailing each other once every few months. David is really interested in Israel, in local politics and would really like to come and visit. When we left his place we were already one floor down when he called us back. "You’re not going anywhere until I give you something for the way – some chocolate, so you’ll leave here with a sweet feeling".

How did you get to IU and what does it mean to you?

I joined the IsraelUnderground community during 2000 and at the age of 18 (I’m 27 now). I located the link to the community’s board in a nightlife website called XTRA. At the time I was very interested in what’s going on in clubs, music and djing. I could spend hours watching pictures and videos from parties in various websites. When I joined the IU community I figured out that this IS the place to get to know people who enhoy the same things I do (until that day all my friends were going to mainstream parties for younger crowds and I craved for the Tel-Aviv scene. I got to know the people in IU and was really happy to be able to spend weekends with those who feel the same as me towards electronic music. Beyond that an entire culture evolved within the community’s boundries, with a unique language, habits and style which gave it a life of its own and also gained the scene’s respect (from clubbers to club owners). Today I’m less involved in IU but I’m certain that whoever is participating probably feels the same things I felt. I think that IU today holds an amzing amount of accumulated knowledge regarding the electronic culture and music and that they are all dear to me.

Ever since it was opened you are involved (mentally if not physically) with "The Block" club. Name one artist who played there who really touched you with his music.

The Block club is the second biggest adventure I’ve had. I bow to Yaron Trax for his vision, passion and for making this dream come true for so many people. I never thought I’d be able to listen to the music I love in such an amazing club, with such an amazing sound system, with such great facilities and then will be able to listen to the true legends of house right here "in our back yard". I think it’s a bit funny, but of all artists who played at the block so far I connected better with the more controversial artists, such as Theo Parrish, Moodyman and Tony Humphries. Don’t get me wrong, I think all parties were amazing but these are the artists the taught me new things all night long. They were very interesting to listen to because they played very diverse music.

Married + 3 kids, VP content/regulation in the satellite company or any similar company in the communications market, a nice summer home in Italy and DJing once a month in "The Block" club.
